A memorial diamond from Eterneva costs between $3,499 and $75,000. A quarter carat starts at $3,499. A one carat diamond is $15,000. A three carat diamond is $42,000, and the largest we grow, five carats, is $75,000. Every color and every cut is the same price at the same size, and payment plans start at $292 a month.

Those are the real numbers. I wanted to put them in the first paragraph because most companies in this space make you fill out a form to see pricing, and I think that's the wrong way to treat someone who is grieving.

But the price is the least interesting part of this question. The interesting part is what the price is made of, why some companies charge half as much, and what is actually happening behind a cheap memorial diamond. I've spent nine years and over $15 million building the largest memorial diamond facility in the world, and I've grown more than 5,000 diamonds. I've also seen things in this industry that families deserve to know before they send anyone their loved one's ashes. This post covers all of it.

Colorless, yellow, blue, green, red, pink, and black are all the same price. Round, cushion, emerald, radiant, asscher, and heart cuts are all the same price. The only variable that moves the number is size, and there's a physical reason for that which I'll get to.

Where the money actually goes

Here is the cost breakdown on a 0.25 carat diamond, from the inside:

  • Diamond growth: 65%. This is the machine time, and it dominates everything.
  • Cutting: 20%. We cut in North America with master cutters. More on why below.
  • Purification and carbon preparation: 10%. Done carefully, in isolation, one person at a time. It costs hundreds of dollars, not thousands. Anyone telling you purification is the expensive part is telling you a story.
  • Grading and engraving: 3%.
  • Packaging and shipping: 2%.

Behind those percentages sits the real cost of a legitimate operation: the capital. A diamond growth machine weighs four to six tons. It grows exactly one diamond at a time. Depending on diamond size, a single machine can produce somewhere between 8 and 40 diamonds per year. We run fifteen of them, alongside a clean room, a dedicated carbon transfer room, and a bank grade vault where ashes, carbon, and finished diamonds are stored. Getting to that point took over $15 million in R&D and facilities, and years of recipe development with some of the best diamond scientists and engineers in the world.

That capacity math is the single most useful number in this post, so I'll say it plainly: one machine, 8 to 40 diamonds per year. Hold onto that. It's how you catch companies lying.

Why does a memorial diamond cost more than a regular lab diamond?

This is the fair objection. A 0.25 carat lab grown diamond retails for a few hundred dollars. So is memorial diamond pricing just a grief markup?

No, and here's the arithmetic. A standard lab grown diamond is grown alongside roughly 100 other diamonds in a single run, in a single machine, usually in India or China. The rough is then shipped to high volume cutting operations in India, China, or Vietnam. The machine time, the labor, and the overhead get divided across a hundred stones.

A memorial diamond uses the same class of machine. But because the carbon inside it came from one specific person, only one diamond can occupy that machine for the entire run. One customer, one growth cell, one machine, weeks to months of machine time. The entire cost that a commodity producer spreads across 100 diamonds lands on a single stone. That's not markup. That's division.

And then there's the part of the cost that isn't about the stone at all. We built Eterneva so that families are part of the process: video and photo updates at every stage, the ability to visit our facility, and a homecoming when the diamond returns. I became an Eterneva customer myself after losing my best friend, and I can tell you the updates during those months mattered as much as the diamond at the end. We price for a process that treats grief with attention, not throughput.

How long it takes, and why speed is a red flag

The honest end to end timeline:

  • Purification and carbon preparation: about a month
  • Growth cell preparation: about a week
  • Diamond growth: weeks to months, depending on size
  • Cutting: about a month
  • Grading and engraving: days

Technically, a company can complete the process in under six months. But machines only grow one diamond at a time, not every growth run is perfect, and premier cutting takes precision and patience. A non-rushed, non-corner-cutting process runs 7 to 11 months depending on the diamond's size and the jewelry it will be set in.

So when a provider promises a diamond in three or four months at half the price, ask yourself which step got compressed. The physics didn't change. Something else did.

What's actually behind a cheap memorial diamond

This industry is unregulated. No agency verifies that the diamond you receive was grown from your loved one's carbon. That vacuum has attracted companies whose economics only work if something they told you isn't true. Here is what I have seen behind low prices:

Outsourced growth, undisclosed. Companies claiming their diamonds are grown in California while the actual growth happens at third party labs in India or China. A beautiful website and a leased office are not a diamond lab.

Batched carbon. Multiple customers' carbon combined into shared growth runs. You get a diamond back. Whether it's meaningfully connected to your loved one is another question.

Overgrown runs. A provider using an outside CVD supplier may grow 50 or 100 diamonds attributed to your loved one's carbon and return one to you. Where do the rest go?

The worst case: no memorial diamond at all. Companies buying generic lab grown diamonds off the market and telling you it was grown from your loved one's ashes. I wish this were paranoia. It isn't.

Here's a real example. A customer of ours, Elisha, was deciding between Eterneva and a lower priced competitor with an office in Valencia, California, for a three carat diamond. The competitor told her everything would happen in California: purification, growth, cutting. Their price was half of ours.

Then she did the math I gave you earlier. That competitor operates a single BARS HPHT press. One machine of that type maxes out around a two carat diamond, and produces at most a few dozen diamonds a year. Yet this company sells diamonds, including three carat diamonds, to hundreds or thousands of customers. The story physically cannot be true. Elisha chose Eterneva, came to our facility, and personally witnessed her diamond being loaded into the machine and grown. She asked us hard questions about chain of custody, and we answered every one, because we designed for exactly that scrutiny.
